"Crap crap crap! Don't hang up! Where the crap is my phone?!!!!" I must have looked like a tornado flying around my house, looking for the damn house phone until I finally grabbed it out from the refrigerator. "Hello?? Hi! How's everything going up by your dad'?"
My husband went to see his dad for a couple of days to get a few things squared away. He's only been gone for about twelve hours, but I miss him. The dogs seem to miss him too. Its pretty depressing when your dog keeps running to window to see if he's home yet.
"So when do you think you'll be back?"
"I'm not sure. Probably by Friday. We have a lot of paperwork to go through. Thankfully, he's very organized. Don't worry though, I won't be gone longer than Friday."
The conversation didn't really go on for very long. Lots of menial stuff. Then I got the question I was waiting to hear from his neurotic self.
"Did you see the news today? I don't want you going to the store alone or at all."
He was referring to the stories we had been hearing on the late news as blurbs here and there. Apparently, 2 or 3 green markets in the country experienced some sort of hostility. Nothing too serious. Some carts were knocked over, a few people were robbed. I wouldn't exactly call it guerrilla warfare. There were rumors that the acts of violence were on behalf of the mega corporation, STILNA.
"Sammy, how do you expect me to get groceries if I can't go to the store?"
"Why don't you go to the regular supermarket? Its the same driving distance as the other one."
"Listen Sam, I'm not going to let these incidents scare me. I refuse to buy produce that isn't local or organic. You can get whatever you want when you go to the store, but you know where I stand. Plus, there is a better selection of gluten free products and I need my cupcakes this week."
"Promise me you'll be safe. Keep an eye out around you. Please."
"I'll be careful. If you want, I'll call you after I get out of the car and walk to the market, ok?"
"Don't' get smart with me Ellie. I'm just worried and I care and I'm far away is all."
"I know, I know. Look, I gotta run. I wan to get there before it gets too crowded. I love you."
"I love you too Ellie. Talk to you later."
So that was it. I got my bag, my car keys and I left for the store.
The drive was great. No traffic and only two idiots on the road and a parking spot right away.
As I started to walk up to the front of the store, something felt off for a second, but I ignored it. That's when it happened.
BOOM!
